The healthcare industry continues to evolve rapidly, with more and more IT innovative systems becoming essential components supporting daily hospital operations. Navv Systems is one of the pioneers in this area, providing systems responsible for hospital location software, allowing to effectively track them and prevent their loss which tends to incur substantial yearly costs otherwise. Due to the real-time processing they provide, as well as compliance and tenant data separation requirements they need to meet, the company faced the challenge of establishing a robust, secure, and scalable cloud infrastructure that would not only support their current operations – but also enable future AI and analytics capabilities.
Our team partnered with Navv Systems to transform their cloud infrastructure, implementing a comprehensive solution that prioritized security, scalability, and ease of deployment. Beginning with a joint, thorough infrastructure review, we implemented a comprehensive Infrastructure as Code solution using Terraform for cloud resource management. To ensure maintainability and reduce the risk of modifications, we divided the infrastructure into smaller, independently deployable components. The implementation of Terragrunt as an orchestrator automated the detection of dependencies between modules, simplifying the creation, deletion, and modification processes while maintaining system reliability. To minimize human error risk, we established a series of automated workflows using GitHub Actions, covering everything from code testing and convention compliance to software deployment on the provisioned infrastructure. The project's technical scope extended beyond infrastructure management, encompassing application modernization through containerization and migration to Kubernetes. Special attention was given to security hardening and compliance with cloud well-architected frameworks principles, particularly crucial given the healthcare domain requirements.
Looking ahead, the infrastructure has been architected with some advanced data processing capabilities in mind. As the cooperation is still ongoing, and the project continues to evolve, the future goal will be to develop an even more robust data infrastructure and ETL pipelines. This will later allow Navv Systems to deploy both retrospective and predictive analytics, leveraging the location data to provide hospitals with operational insights – while also maintaining strict security and compliance standards of the healthcare industry such as SOC2 and HIPAA.
